Description
Arachidyl alcohol is a waxy solid chunk, also known as 1-eicosanol. It is made by hydration of arachidic acid, which is found in peanut oil. It is a waxy substance that acts as an emollient and thickener in cosmetics. As an emollient, arachidyl alcohol soothes and calms the skin (or hair), while also acting as an occlusive agent. When occlusive agents are applied, they form a protective film on the skin surface that helps prevent the loss of natural skin moisture. This eventually increases skin hydration by trapping water in the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin). As a thickener, arachidyl alcohol is added to formulations to increase their viscosity, resulting in a product with a rich texture. It is also used as a lubricant. It helps dry, flaky skin to retain moisture and prevent moisture loss by forming a thin film on the skin.
