Description
Benzyl benzoate is a synthetic chemical used as a flavoring ingredient, preservative, and solvent. As a bacteriostatic preservative, benzyl benzoate works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria but does not necessarily kill them. This is in contrast to bactericides, which kill bacteria. Because benzyl alcohol cannot kill bacteria, it is usually combined with other preservatives in cosmetic formulations. Properties of benzyl benzoate in cosmetic products: • Gives a pleasant smell to the product; • Controls the pH level in the product; • Protects the skin from pollution; • Is a solvent for other components.
