Description
BHT (butylhydroxytoluene) is a chemical antioxidant used in cosmetic products to prevent oxidation and deterioration of product quality. It protects the cosmetic product from the action of acids and other oxidizing agents that can change the color, smell and consistency of the product. BHT can also have antibacterial properties and help preserve the freshness of cosmetics that tend to degrade or decompose quickly. However, BHT is a fairly controversial ingredient as some studies have shown its possible negative health effects. Therefore, in some countries, the use of BHT in cosmetics is restricted or prohibited.
