Description
Ceramides are lipids (fats) that are found in high concentrations in the uppermost layers of the skin. They make up more than 50% of the skin's composition, so it's no wonder they play a vital role in determining how your skin looks. Ceramides help keep the skin together by forming a protective layer that limits moisture loss and protects against visible damage from pollution and other environmental factors. Ceramides are even more than retinol, niacinamide, and peptides - they are one of the antioxidant "power plants" responsible for maintaining the dynamic nature of the skin. Two specific precursors to ceramides - phytosphingosine and sphingolipids - actually help the skin produce more ceramides. In addition to increasing the structure and integrity of the skin barrier, ceramides are known for their antioxidant and moisturizing properties.
