Description

Hydrolyzed keratin is a large protein molecule that has undergone a chemical process that breaks it down in such a way that it can penetrate the hair cuticle. It is derived from a larger keratin molecule and undergoes a process called enzymatic hydrolysis. Keratin is broken down by cleaving its bonds with the addition of hydrogen and hydroxide (water). Hydrolyzed keratin also provides a smoothing element, as it essentially acts like cement filler in a crack. When hydrolyzed keratin is applied topically to the hair, it helps fill in minor gaps along the entire length of the hair shaft, including its three layers, known as the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. Filling these microscopic gaps with split protein gives the hair a temporary strength boost, minimizing the harmful effects of sun exposure, heat styling, chemical treatment, and mechanical manipulation (or hair combing). Other benefits include reduced brittleness, delamination, and curly hair, as well as increased elasticity, shine, and moisture retention. This helps restore the hair's natural protective layer from within, replacing lost protein and increasing the diameter of each strand, giving it a fuller appearance. After chemical treatment, the hair will feel softer and more elastic when using the ingredient.
