Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid (HEPES) is a synthetic buffering agent that regulates the pH of cosmetic products. It maintains formula stability, preventing an overly acidic or alkaline environment, which is important for active ingredients such as acids or vitamin C. HEPES also has a gentle keratolytic effect, promoting the shedding of dead cells and improving skin texture. This is why it is added to serums, toners, peels, and creams, particularly in anti-aging and dermatological cosmetics.
