Description
Maltodextrin is a polysaccharide, meaning it is composed of long chains of monosaccharide (sugar) units linked together by glycosidic bonds. Maltodextrin acts as a moisturizing ingredient because it mimics the composition of the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF) found in the epidermis. NMF is a large group of substances, including amino acids, PCA, lactates, sugars, salts, urea, and peptides. Together, they work to keep the skin surface intact, elastic, and hydrated. Maltodextrin also acts as an absorbent and binding agent in cosmetic products. Since it is composed of simple sugar building blocks that readily hydrate in an aqueous environment, it has the ability to create a gel-like structure in formulations. It is also believed that maltodextrin has anti-aging and soothing properties. Hydroxy acids (i.e. alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids) are commonly used in skincare products due to their ability to improve the appearance of photodamaged or naturally aged skin, lighten the skin, treat age spots, and more.
