Description
Propandiol acts as a soothing agent, moisturizer and solvent in cosmetics. As a soothing agent, propandiol has the ability to soothe and calm the skin. When applied, propandiol forms an occlusive film on the skin surface which helps to prevent water loss. This eventually increases the hydration of the skin, causing water accumulation in the stratum corneum (the top layer of the skin). Propandiol also acts as a moisturizer. A moisturizer is a hygroscopic substance which often has a molecular structure with multiple hydrophilic groups. This structure allows moisturizing agents to attract and retain moisture in the air nearby by absorption, drawing water vapor into or under the surface.
