Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), a type of carbon-based organic compound that naturally occurs in willow bark, fruits, and vegetables. Salicylic acid not only fights bacteria but also reduces inflammation and exfoliates the skin. Salicylic acid is an excellent ingredient for pore cleansing because it exfoliates the skin's surface and penetrates the pores to remove oil. In addition to treating acne, you may have seen salicylic acid in products that "rejuvenate" or "brighten" your skin. This is because it is used as a gentler chemical peel for patients prone to acne breakouts or for those who need a less intensive peel. Salicylic acid is a great ingredient for people with oily and acne-prone skin, especially for treating and preventing comedonal acne (blackheads and whiteheads). People with dry or sensitive skin should exercise extra caution, as this ingredient may further dry out and irritate the skin.
