Description
Lactate of sodium is a sodium salt of lactic acid. With a hydroxyl group adjacent to the carboxyl group, lactic acid is classified as an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). In cosmetics, lactate of sodium acts as: 1. Preservative enhancer. Lactate of sodium is not an effective preservative when used alone. It should be used in addition to a full spectrum preservative. 2. Buffering agent. Lactate of sodium acts as a bacteriostatic agent, meaning it stops the reproduction of bacteria in cosmetic products without necessarily killing them. 3. Moisturizer. Its structure allows moisturizing agents to attract and retain moisture in the air nearby by absorption, drawing water vapor "into" or "onto" the surface. As a moisturizer, lactate of sodium helps keep the skin moisturized and, reportedly, increases the moisture content in the skin to 84%.
