Sorbitol is classified as a sugar alcohol. A large portion of sorbitol is derived from corn syrup. This ingredient exists in the form of crystals or liquid. Sorbitol is used as a humectant. Due to its humectant properties, sorbitol is a beneficial ingredient for people with dry skin. As a humectant, sorbitol is often used as an alternative to glycerin. Glycerin is another humectant, but sorbitol is considered a less expensive alternative to glycerin. Another function of sorbitol in cosmetics and personal hygiene products is as a thickener. Sorbitol can support the thickening action of viscosity enhancers.
