Description
Urea is a natural substance found in the outer layer of our skin, and an active part of our natural moisturizing factor (NMF) that helps skin to hydrate, protect, and function effectively. It is composed of 40% amino acids, 12% sodium PCA, 9% glycerin, and 8.5% urea – all of which are hygroscopic (water-binding) components necessary to maintain the health, function, and hydration of the stratum corneum. There is evidence to suggest that urea can help treat ichthyosis, dermatitis, psoriasis, xerosis, as well as acne. Its gentle exfoliating action helps to make the skin very smooth, especially in the multilayer form. Other properties of urea include: • It regulates moisture content in the skin and is an important component of our natural moisturizing factor (NMF); • Urea is hygroscopic, which means it is able to bind moisture to the outer layer of our skin; • It is an ideal remedy for dry skin and has anti-itch and antimicrobial properties; • Urea can kill acne-causing bacteria; • It is also keratolytic, meaning it breaks down the bonds between dead skin cells; • Naturally exfoliates the skin and helps ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin.
