Description

Geraniol is a terpene alcohol found in the essential oils of several aromatic plants. Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds produced by various plants. In addition to acting as a flavoring ingredient, geraniol is also used in fragrances such as peach, raspberry, plum, citrus, watermelon, pineapple, and blueberry. Research has shown that geraniol exhibits various biochemical and pharmacological properties. For example, geraniol can function as an antimicrobial agent due to its solubility in phospholipid bilayers of cell membranes. Lastly, geraniol has been investigated for use as a penetration enhancer. The enhancing ability of geraniol allows it to be used as a carrier for other molecules that are unable to independently overcome skin barriers. In fact, geraniol and other terpenes are used to improve transdermal drug delivery because they reportedly have good toxicological profiles, high abilities for subcutaneous enhancement, and minimal skin irritation at low concentrations (from 1 to 5%).
