Description
Sunflower oil is used as a cosmetic ingredient as an emollient. It also provides benefits such as reducing inflammation, restoring the skin barrier, and preventing hair loss. As an emollient, sunflower oil softens and soothes the skin, as well as acting as an occlusive agent. When applied, occlusive agents form a protective film on the skin's surface. This film helps prevent the natural moisture of the skin from evaporating and increases skin hydration by causing water to accumulate in the stratum corneum (the topmost layer of the skin). Sunflower oil has anti-inflammatory properties due to its high linoleic acid content. Linoleic acid moisturizes the skin and improves its elasticity, as well as affecting certain mediators of inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of sunflower oil make it an excellent ingredient for people with dry or irritated skin. Sunflower oil is also widely used in hair conditioners and other hair products because of its emollient properties. In fact, it is the second most common base oil used in the hair oil industry.
