Description

Potassium sorbate is obtained in the industry by neutralizing sorbic acid with potassium hydroxide. It is used in cosmetics in concentrations up to 1%. Although potassium sorbate is effective against fungi, mold, and yeast, it is less active against bacteria. Therefore, potassium sorbate is not considered a broad-spectrum preservative and must be used in conjunction with other preservatives to ensure formula protection. Preservatives have received a negative evaluation in the cosmetics and skin care industry due to claims that preservatives are dangerous to health. This is why many organic and natural cosmetic brands often include "preservative-free" labels on their product labels. However, the use of preservatives is necessary for most products to prevent decomposition caused by microorganisms and to protect the product from accidental contamination by the consumer during use.
